El Lago de Texcoco no solo es un espacio natural restaurado; también guarda una historia muy antigua que aún se puede sentir en el paisaje. Este lugar fue el corazón de grandes civilizaciones, especialmente de los mexicas, quienes en el año 1325 fundaron Tenochtitlán justo aquí, guiados por la señal del águila sobre el nopal devorando una serpiente.
Lo que hoy es Ciudad de México comenzó como una ciudad construida sobre islotes en medio del lago. Sus habitantes usaban el agua para sembrar, navegar, celebrar rituales y conectarse con lo sagrado. La vida giraba alrededor del lago y se organizaba en armonía con la naturaleza.
Todavía hay rastros visibles de esa época. Las chinampas, esas pequeñas islas de cultivo hechas a mano, sobreviven en algunos rincones. Los canales servían como calles acuáticas donde la gente se movía en canoas. Los albarradones, que eran muros para controlar el agua, demostraban el conocimiento hidráulico del pueblo mexica. Y, con suerte, al caminar por ciertas zonas o tras una lluvia intensa, se pueden ver fragmentos de cerámica, obsidiana y otros objetos que formaban parte de la vida cotidiana.
Todo esto importa porque nos conecta con la historia viva del territorio. El lago no es solo tierra y agua; es memoria. Cuidarlo hoy significa respetar la sabiduría de quienes lo habitaron antes, y reconocer que la naturaleza era, para ellos, algo que se honraba, no se explotaba.
